Dragon Ball Kai è un anime di 159 episodi ideato per celebrare il 20º anniversario dalla prima trasmissione di Dragon Ball Z in Giappone, avvenuta nell'aprile del 1989. Questa nuova serie non è stata creata dal nulla, bensì apportando delle modifiche consistenti al vecchio anime Dragon Ball Z. La lettera "Z" nel titolo è stata, infatti, sostituita con la parola "Kai" che significa revisionato/modificato.
