London, 1991. Delia Balmer, a temp nurse, goes out for drinks at a pub with her friend Leah and meets John Sweeney, a carpenter. Fascinated by his unconventional lifestyle, Deli invites John back to her place on the spot. Meanwhile, in Amsterdam, American Jack Halstead pleads with the Dutch police to help him search for his missing daughter. After spending Christmas with John's family in his hometown of Skermerdale, Delia learns that John has an ex-wife and children.

Although Delia tried to escape Sweeney's violence, she was paralyzed by the fear that if she reported him to the police, he might kill her. At the urging of her friend Leah, she sought help from an organization that supports women suffering from domestic violence, but ultimately decided to file a report with the police's domestic violence unit. By the time the police arrived at her apartment, Sweeney had already fled.

Delia, who had barely survived, was in critical condition in the hospital while the police searched for Sweeney. Delia gradually recovered, but Sweeney ultimately evaded the police. With her family in the United States and not even allowed to receive visits from friends for her own safety, Delia initially relied on WPC Jane Barker, the family liaison. Though plagued by PTSD and nightmares, Delia gradually regained a sense of normalcy and moved into a new apartment—but then...

[Season Finale] Delia endures the grueling cross-examination and gives testimony that secures a conviction for Sweeney. However, far from bringing peace, the news that Sweeney—sentenced to life imprisonment—has been granted parole fills Delia with unprecedented rage. After the trial, Delia finds an outlet for her anger by writing letters of protest to the Chief of Police and the Minister. Some time later, the Amsterdam Police identify parts of Melissa Halstead's remains.
