Jennifer discovers bloodstains on a wedding dress she bought at an estate sale and, driven by curiosity, begins investigating the case. Through her own deductions, she determines the dress belonged to Helen, the bride in a groom disappearance case that occurred 35 years ago. Determined to uncover the truth for Helen, who has suffered slander because of the incident, Jennifer sets out. She visits Helen and Ted, the groomsman and another person involved in the incident, to hear their stories.

When a youth pastor is found murdered at a church, Backstrom and his team at the Special Crimes Unit must solve the case while navigating the tenuous terrain of a possible cult. Meanwhile, Backstrom's ex-fiance, Amy Gazanian, is recruited by the Chief of Police to head up the newly formed Civilian Oversight Committee with the task of investigating questionable conduct within the Police Bureau, pitting Backstrom’s squad against hers.
