Tragedy strikes the life of a young girl befriended by the Waltons when her drunken father burns the schoolhouse in the name of religion after he learns the children are being taught the theory of evolution.

Ann is shocked by her ex-husband's announcement that he can no longer afford to pay child support. Ed comes crawling to Ann with stories of financial disaster, but she confronts him with his recent extravagances for the sake of his new marriage.

Ann watches unsympathetically as a broken and vulnerable Ed, unable to meet his family responsibilities, must either level with the truth or compromise his daughters, in the conclusion of a two-part story.
