The investigation into the death of an adopted baby girl leads Detectives Briscoe (Jerry Orbach) and Curtis (Benjamin Bratt) to uncover secrets an adoptive family was desperately trying to hide. When the baby's brother turns out to be an abusive and disturbed young boy, Assistant District Attorney McCoy (Sam Waterston) and his new headstrong partner, Assistant District Attorney Abbie Carmichael, try to prove it was murder. They soon realize things don't always appear as they seem. S. Epatha Merkerson and Steven Hill also star.

When a Jewish art teacher is killed in her classroom, Briscoe and Curtis question a fellow teacher with whom the victim had argued. However, further investigation reveals an undercurrent of anti-Semitic hate among the student body. Chris Cooper (The Patriot) guest stars.
