Etevaldo, a nomadic rural worker meets Maria, a young and free-spirited woman whose family has already promised in marriage. They fall in love and escape. They are rescued by Valda who offers them shelter. When Valda's nephew and cop Ribamar appears , his threats and attraction to Maria spur the couple to flee. The cop's investigations reveal a secret, raising the community's hatred.
