The Other Renaissance
Inspired by the landmark exhibition organized by the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte and the Museo Nacional del Prado, the documentary The Other Renaissance takes audiences on a journey across Italy and Spain. This cinematic road trip reveals extraordinary Renaissance masterpieces while immersing viewers in the life and soul of contemporary cities — Naples, Madrid, Barcelona, Granada — alongside the breathtaking landscapes of Aragón and the enduring artistic heritage of Milan, Florence, and Rome. The film explores the Spanish artists at the heart of the exhibition, bringing their paintings and sculptures to life through the insights of directors and curators. It goes behind the scenes, from the careful handling of artworks and the intricate setup of exhibitions to the delicate process of restoration. Then it steps beyond museum walls, seeking traces of their genius in the churches and palaces of Italy and Spain. Through the voices of contemporary artists and cultural figures, the documentary reflects on the identities of both nations: the closeness of the Neapolitan dialect to Spanish, the sense of the sacred, the perception of death, and the ways in which historical monuments are preserved. It reveals how art builds bridges across cultures and how exchange and travel, then as now, expand not only horizons but perspectives. Produced by Didi Gnocchi for 3D Produzioni, directed by Valeria Parisi, and written by Arianna Marelli, the documentary is made in collaboration with the Museo Nacional del Prado, the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte, and under the patronage of the Embassy of Spain in Italy, with the support of Associazione Chiamale Storie and Fondazione Pasquinelli.
