Psychologist Susan Blackmore wants to know if apes possess the same cognitive skills as humans. Can they use language, maps, or conscious choice? In search of the prime primate, she introduces us to several prime primates - Chantek the orang-utan understands signing well enough to ask Susan for apple, not banana, while Ai the Japanese chimpanzee beats Susan hands-down at a math-and-memory test.
