Behind the Sun
A family feud is no game, in this Brazilian film by director Walter Salles. When a dispute over land gets bloody, competing clans begin exchanging harsh words and hostilities. The targets are typically eldest sons and as one falls, the next is expected to carry on the custom. A middle son, Tonho (Rodrigo Santor), inherits this role when his older brother is slain, but he is reluctant to continue the vicious cycle. His father (José Dumont) demands retribution so Tonho obliges, but in the process falls for Clara (Flavia Marco Antonio), a member of a traveling circus. As Tonho trades killing for kissing, he may have found a convincing reason to leave the violence behind.
