What’s the movie about?

F1® The Movie is an action-packed Apple Original Film starring Brad Pitt, from the team behind Top Gun: Maverick. It’s directed by Joseph Kosinski and produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, Kosinski, seven-time F1® champion Lewis Hamilton, Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Keiner, and Chad Oman.

Dubbed “the greatest that never was,” Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was the most promising F1® driver of the ’90s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he’s a nomadic racer-for-hire when he’s approached by Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), a former teammate who owns a struggling F1® team, APXGP, on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back to F1® for one last shot to save the team and be the best in the world. He’ll drive alongside Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), the team’s hotshot rookie intent on setting his own pace. As things heat up on the track, Sonny’s past catches up with him. He finds that your own teammate can be your fiercest competition—and redemption is not something you can find alone.

F1® The Movie also stars Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Kim Bodnia, and it was shot during actual Grand Prix races.

The screenplay was written by Ehren Kruger. The film is executive produced by Daniel Lupi. The creative team behind the scenes includes director of photography Claudio Miranda, production designers Mark Tildesley and Ben Munro, editor Stephen Mirrione, costume designer Julian Day, casting director Lucy Bevan, and composer Hans Zimmer.

    Who’s in the movie?

F1® The Movie stars Brad Pitt, Damson Idris, Javier Bardem, Kerry Condon, Tobias Menzies, and Kim Bodnia.

    • Brad Pitt

      Brad Pitt

      as Sonny Hayes

Sonny Hayes is a retired F1® driver who gets an incredible second shot at the career he lost decades ago after a terrible crash. F1® The Movie follows his big comeback as he joins APXGP and teams up with rookie Joshua Pearce. Sonny and Josh are total opposites, which makes their partnership fun (and messy) to watch. They have to put their differences aside and figure out how to become a real team.

    • Damson Idris

      Damson Idris

      as Joshua Pearce

Joshua Pearce is the ambitious rookie who ends up partnering with Sonny on the struggling APXGP team. He’s young, talented, and eager to prove himself. His relationship with Sonny starts off pretty rough—lots of bumps, lots of ego—but watching the two of them grow and learn to work together is a huge part of the film’s emotional core.

    • Kerry Condon

      Kerry Condon

      as Kate McKenna

Kate is the technical director at APXGP, which means she’s the mastermind behind the car—the design, the performance, the development, all of it. She’s on the front lines during each race, monitoring every last detail. She believes in the team’s potential for success but has to get the drivers out of their own way. When tensions between Sonny and Joshua become insurmountable, it’s Kate who steps in to force the dueling duo to reconcile. While she ends up having a romance with Sonny, Kate always puts the job first.

    • Javier Bardem

      Javier Bardem

      as Ruben Cervantes

Ruben is the owner of APXGP—and he’s a former teammate of Sonny’s from his racing days. Their history is the reason Ruben is able to talk Sonny back into the sport, where he’d team up with rookie Joshua Pearce. It’s a bold move, and he knows it could cost him everything if it goes wrong: If APXGP can’t secure a win this season, the team will be sold. But Ruben genuinely believes that pairing his old friend with new talent might be exactly what APXGP needs to turn things around and become a real contender.

    • Tobias Menzies

      Tobias Menzies

      as Peter Banning

Peter sits on the APXGP board, but he doesn’t always have the team’s best interests at heart. His decisions tend to lean toward what benefits him, even pushing Ruben toward decisions that could negatively impact the team. He brings a lot of behind-the-scenes tension to an already high-pressure environment.

    • Kim Bodnia

      Kim Bodnia

      as Kaspar Smolinski

Kaspar is the team principal—the one responsible for the overall performance and direction of APXGP. He’s working alongside Ruben and Kate while trying to build a competitive car and manage the very different personalities of Sonny and Joshua. The pressure is intense, and Kaspar is right in the middle of all of it.

Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Joseph Kosinski converse in a pit lane area at a race track.

    Who are the filmmakers?

F1® The Movie comes from the same team that brought you Top Gun: Maverick. It’s directed by Joseph Kosinski—who you might also know from Tron: Legacy, Oblivion, and Only the Brave. He’s joined by an incredible group of producers: Jerry Bruckheimer (the powerhouse behind Top Gun, Pirates of the Caribbean, Bad Boys, and so many more) plus seven-time F1® world champion Lewis Hamilton, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Chad Oman. It’s a stacked team on and off the track.

F1® The Movie is out now and available to stream on Apple TV.
