Melinda Gordon is a young newlywed with the unique ability to communicate with the earthbound spirits of people who have died and who seek her help.

After Melinda falls and injures her head, she discovers that she can no longer communicate with earthbound sprits and fears that she has lost her `gift' forever. To complicate matters, Melinda is asked to help comfort a teenage girl who is devastated by the recent death of her boyfriend. Now, Melinda faces the challenge of helping the young teenager cross over while questioning whether her gift will ever return.

When nurse Roberts takes a turn for the worse, the team are faced with the possibility of her death and all deal with it in their own way.

Sipowicz arrives at the scene of the homicide of a pregnant 18-year-old. According to a uniform, Clark is already on the scene but asleep in his car waiting for the others to arrive.
