After successfully rekindling their relationship in spite of, rather than because of, their couples therapy, Louisa and Martin are living together again in the surgery. Meanwhile, Portwenn is buzzing with anticipation for Janice and Penhale's wedding.

After Dr Dibbs leaves, Dr Ellingham moves back into the surgery until a replacement can be found. He also asks Louisa to move into his house so he can help to raise their child.

Martin finds himself trapped by Annie Winton who desperately wants him to try and save her husband Jim, who has recently been diagnosed as having terminal cancer.

Martin's new receptionist makes a poor first impression; Louisa and Martin find sleepless nights are taking their toll.

PC Joe Penhale's ex-wife Maggie shows up unexpectedly, and appears to have completely forgotten that they split up a couple of years ago.

Martin returns to Portwenn, but without Louisa. She has gone to stay with her mother in Spain to take some time out to think, and Martin is left wondering if she will ever come back. Aunt Ruth has found him a therapist.
