The World's Biggest Family
A man with 600 half-siblings looks at the odd world of anonymous sperm donation and how that standard practice of anonymity is starting to crack open at last. Viewers will meet his new-found family – people whose whole life story has been turned upside down in middle age by a DNA result – and witness not only the shock, but the pleasure they have in finding each other. The documentary takes a critical look at anonymous sperm donation: the doctors who used their own sperm and lied about it; the anonymous donors with mental or physical genetic illnesses that are passed on to some of their dozens of kids, who may not know why they are ill or how they are at risk; and the donors who, after selling their sperm, discover they may have many hundreds of kids -- despite being told by sperm banks that there were strict numerical limits. But now that DNA tests are busting open the secrets and lies, many ‘donor’-conceived people say they are angry, and they want things to change.
