Ha esordito come membro dei Police. Il suo primo album solista fu The dream of the blue turtles, un disco che contiene i due grandi successi If You Love Somebody e Russians. Nel 1991 esce Soul cages, disco autobiografico che contiene due immancabili successi come If I ever lose my faith in you e Fields of gold.
