It's 1955 in Paris, where the city is enjoying a blisteringly hot summer while being caught in the grip of fear. The reason for that fear is because four women have been murdered and Chief Inspector Maigret is under huge pressure to find the killer.

Maigret's determination to find the murderer of a man who called him just a few hours before being killed eventually leads to a gang who slaughtered families in Picardie.

Crime drama adapted from the novel by Georges Simenon. Chief Inspector Maigret faces a wall of silence from the eccentric inhabitants at a remote crossroads as he investigates the murder of a Jewish diamond dealer, who was killed in the dead of night. The body is discovered in a car belonging to Carl Anderson, a Dane living with his sister in a crumbling mansion. Assuming the Andersons are guilty, local police Inspector Grandjean calls his old friend Maigret to intercept the Andersons as they flee to Paris by train. But Maigret is not convinced, and takes control of the investigation.
