Military journalist Jake Geismer returns to Berlin for the first time since the 30s, ostensibly to cover the Potsdam conference but also to find Lena Brandt, the girl he left behind. He is shocked to find out she is now a prostitute and the girlfriend of Corporal Tully, his assigned driver, who also deals in the thriving black market. When Tully is found murdered and Lena is implicated, Jake finds he's warned off.
