In Washington, political journalist Janine Roth meets Republican senator Jasper Irving, so that he can explain his new strategy for Afghanistan and Iraq. Meanwhile, in a Californian university, liberal tutor Dr Malley is trying to inspire idle student Todd to use his intellect instead of wasting it. In Afghanistan, two of Malley's former students struggle to survive in enemy territory after their helicopter is shot down.
