When lonely comedian George Simmons discovers he is terminally ill, he decides to take aspiring young stand-up Ira Wright under his wing. After catching some of Ira's routine, George hires him as a gag writer and assistant, and soon decides to tell his protégé that he's dying. Ira helps his new friend through his gruelling treatment as well as helping him reconnect with his past.
