Capt Kirk investigates the penal colony on Tantalus when a prominent doctor, claiming patient abuses, smuggles himself on board the Enterprise.

The people of Stratos City look down on the earthbound slaves who work their mines. Appalled by their callous exploitation of their compatriots, Kirk risks his life to make both rulers and revolutionaries see reason.

A sense of desperation descends on the Enterprise when Kirk makes the ultimate sacrifice for the sake of his ship. However, after the crew have paid a final tribute to their captain, he reappears to his successor from the void in a secret recorded message.

Captain Kirk responds to a distress call from the planet Triacus where the crew are horrified to find young children playing happily, oblivious to the bodies of dead parents strewn around them.
