Two sisters find themselves unexpectedly penniless after the death of their doctor father.

Beatrice has started working for photographer Jack Maddox. Evangeline opens a letter addressed to her father and, suspecting that the woman writer was his mistress, sets out to find her. Jack, meanwhile, decides the girls need some fun and whisks them off to a glamorous party.

Evie begins her first job, as an apprentice to a dressmaker. Meanwhile, Beatrice receives an unexpected visit from her father's mistress, and is shocked to learn the truth.

Sebastian's surprise visit catches the sisters off guard. Evie warms to his charm, while Beatrice is naturally cautious and suspicious of his real motives.

Beatrice and Evie's dismissal from Duroque's has left them out of work. With only a few private commissions to keep them going, they face an uncertain future.

Beatrice and Evie try to get financial backing for their business venture, but no-one will risk capital on an insecure enterprise run by two inexperienced women.
