Dreaming Whilst Black

An old friend offers to pass Kwabena’s script on to the development team at the production company where she works. On the way to pitch his script, he spots Vanessa and is instantly taken. The team loves the script and wants to meet him the following afternoon, however he has a major work conflict. Later that night he spots Vanessa getting off the bus, giving him the perfect excuse to introduce himself. Season premiere.

Having quit his job in recruitment, Kwabena struggles to balance moonlighting as a food delivery driver with trying to raise funding for his film, Jamaica Road. His romance with Vanessa grows stronger, and yet he can’t help but feel a little inadequate in comparison to her. Funmi sets Kwabena up with a cushy gig filming her eccentric aunt’s birthday party. Amy pushes for a promotion at work while Maurice is anxious about the arrival of his first child.

Kwabena and Amy meet an industry exec at a diversity mixer. Kwabena gets him to read his script but not before making some harsh accusations while drunk. Vanessa’s friends grill Kwabena over dinner at a fancy London restaurant. Meanwhile, Amy continues to struggle with microaggressions at work while Maurice decides he and Funmi should go vegan for the health of the baby.

Kwabena desperately tries to find somewhere new to live but it’s proving difficult. Funmi goes into labor, but something doesn’t feel right, forcing her to have an emergency c-section. At home, Kwabena’s aunt is worried about her son, and asks Kwabena to pass his resume to his old recruitment colleagues. Vanessa reveals a major career development after Kwabena confesses his true feelings.

Kwabena moves back home with his mother. William encourages Kwabena to pitch a film inspired by his troubled cousin, but he feels conflicted about it. When Amy tells Kwabena she’s moving back to Nigeria he asks her if she will produce his film. Meanwhile, Maurice and Funmi argue whether or not Mayowa should be circumcised.

Kwabena and Amy have made their film. Vanessa and Kwabena struggle to find time for one another. Kwabena is riding high at the screening when he receives an offer from an agent. Sharing the news with his family comes with a devastating blow and accusations from his Uncle Claude. Left with the guilt of the appropriation he promised to fight against Kwabena is left to wonder: has he sold out his morals in his search for success? Season finale.
