EPISODE 1
The Crime
The documentary series opens with a gripping cold open, thrusting viewers into the global media frenzy that erupted around the case. The episode traces the feverish speculation and rumour that swept through Korumburra and beyond, as the public and the press try to piece together what happened at Erin Patterson's fateful lunch. Through the eyes of the townspeople, we meet Erin: enigmatic, polarising, and at the centre of a rapidly growing storm. The victims, pillars of the local community, are introduced with empathy and depth, their lives and connections to Erin explored to highlight the tragedy's impact. As rumors about Erin's past and her relationship with her estranged husband Simon swirl, the tension mounts - did she do it, or is she a victim of circumstance? The episode's thematic spine is the sanctity of the home-cooked meal and the horror of its betrayal, drawing the audience into the heart of the mystery. The episode climaxes with the bombshell charges: three counts of murder, one count of attempted murder for Ian Wilkinson, and, in a stunning twist, four further charges of attempted murder against Simon over the preceding five years. The community, press, and police reflect on the enormity of the case, setting the stage for the series' central question: what really happened in that kitchen?
