Around The World By Train With Tony Robinson

The Himalayan Mountain Railway is an engineering miracle originally built for transporting tea, while a hot air balloon provides a view of the 2,500 temples of Burma. Next, Tony crosses the Bay of Bengal to Burma, where his first stop is Mandalay.

In the North of Thailand, Tony finds himself amid a Buddhist ceremony, then takes a sleeper train to Bangkok. Crossing the border into Malaysia, Tony instantly sees echoes of British rule everywhere, while Kuala Lumpur is a city of wild contrasts.

As he rides the rails across the mighty island of Australia, Tony visits a vast outback farm where herding is done by helicopter. He learns about the uncertain future facing the world-famous Great Barrier Reef and tries his hand at spearfishing.

Riding both a local railway and the legendary bullet train, Tony explores the samurai of Kyushu, and the neon lights of Tokyo. The last leg of his Japanese journey sees the bullet shooting Tony further north, emerging in the thick snow of Hakodate.

Beginning in San Francisco, Tony rides the rails across the country. At a legendary local sandwich shop, he finds himself sitting next to the mayor of New Orleans who explains how the city has been re-building since hurricane Katrina.

Tony takes a less-well trodden train trip around the globe. Tony's rides the rails through the heart of South America, as he explores Argentina and Peru.
