Given the grim task of seeking survivors on planet Omicron Ceti III, which has become exposed to deadly rays, Captain Kirk is astounded to find everyone in perfect health. However, not everything is quite as it seems.

When first Sulu and then Captain Kirk vanish from the bridge, Spock sends an Away Team down to an uncharted planet. There they find a mansion containing all the artefacts pertaining to gracious living, and their host proclaims he is the Squire of Gothos.

Captain Kirk faces double trouble when the USS Enterprise becomes trapped in a cosmic cauldron and a landing party sent to Pirus VII becomes the 'guests' of Korob and Sylvia, weavers of magic spells.
