Based on the experiences of Jerzy Stefan Stawinski, a survivor of the 1944 Warsaw uprising. The Polish resistance, expecting the advancing Russians to join them in liberating the city, launched their offensive against the Nazis, but they faced a hopeless fight against superior forces. The Russians halted their advance and waited for the resistance to weaken the Nazis, knowing they would perish in the process. Cannes-winning film.
