Family Law

TV Show · Drama · Crime

"Family Law" centers around Abigail Bianchi, a high-paid personal injury lawyer who's good at blaming others -- particularly when it comes to her own problems. After Abby's husband kicks her out of the family home because of her drinking, she goes on a bender, shows up drunk in court. The law society's punishment is swift. She's suspended, fined, and can only practice law again if she finds a senior lawyer who is willing to take her on and mentor her for a one year probationary period. Only one man is willing to take that risk: Harry Svensson, who runs the top family law practice in the city. He also happens to be Abby's estranged father, who left Abby and her complicated mother for his secretary when Abby was seven. Thus begins the odd dynamic at Abigail's new workplace. Abby has to try to put her shambles of a life back on track, all while working under the thumb of the man she's spent a lifetime resenting.

    What Came First?
It’s a bumpy start for Abby and Frank as they begin their new ‘nesting arrangement’ — alternating weeks in the family home with Sofia and Nico. Frank makes Abby feel like the hired help in her own house, and Abby responds with her unique brand of domestic sabotage. Abby’s new client, Hannah, also finds herself the odd one out when her ex-husband, Terry, wants to use an embryo they banked during IVF treatments years ago to start a family with his new partner, Jean-Paul. Meanwhile, Daniel and Martina can’t keep their hands off each other. But the honeymoon phase ends abruptly when Martina’s boyfriend, Quinn, returns from working abroad. Lucy, still devastated by Maggie’s decision to flee the city with their newborn daughter, loses her cool with a difficult client, but finds comfort in the company of fellow psychologist, Kelly. Unlike his children, Harry’s personal and professional lives are coming up roses. He lands a lucrative new client, Sabrina Bass, and his relationship with Joanne is flourishing, despite Abby’s misgivings.

It's the End of the World as We Know It
Abby and Daniel take on a new client, Magnus Sundstrom. Since his wife died, Magnus has thrown himself and his young children into environmental activism. His in-laws feel Magnus is alienating them from their grandchildren and putting the kids in harm’s way, so they fight to strip Magnus of custody. Despite their chemistry, Abby starts to worry Aidan is sacrificing his dreams of parenthood to make their relationship work. Lucy and Kelly are falling hard and fast for each other, but Abby’s first impression of Kelly leaves much to be desired. And Harry asks his ex- girlfriend and ex-client, Crystal Steele, to return an heirloom diamond bracelet... because Joanne wants it as a birthday present. Crystal retaliates by making a complaint against Harry to the Law Society, resulting in his temporary suspension from practicing law.

    Play It Straight
With Harry suspended, Daniel gleefully takes charge of the firm, but Harry can’t stay away and fights for control behind the scenes. Abby and Daniel inherit Harry’s client, TV movie star Zander Davenport. Zander claims his ex, Topher, has violated their NDA by writing a play about their relationship. Now Zander — who has lived his whole life in the closet — has been fired from the conservative television network where he featured regularly as the romantic lead. After Topher’s lawyer proves Zander was fired for his age, not his sexuality, it seems Abby is done with her difficult client — until Zander discovers Topher also has a humiliating new television series based on Zander that’s about to go into production. Meanwhile, staying with Lucy on her off weeks, Abby’s not thrilled to discover that Kelly, and her unsolicited opinions, have become an ever-present fixture in Lucy’s apartment. And Abby’s amicable coparenting relationship with Frank sours when she learns he’s introduced Nico to his new girlfriend Isabelle.

  • EPISODE 5
Between a Rock and a Hard Place
After their autistic son, Rory, is expelled, Paul and Margo Gardiner hire Abby to force his school to take him back. Abby sees firsthand the Gardiners’ inability to manage on their own, and how much their lives improve when an emergency hospitalization gives Rory access to professional support. An offhand comment by Lucy about the possibility of a group home with specialized staff leads Abby to make a desperate gamble: she recommends the Gardiners refuse to pick up Rory from the hospital and surrender care of him to the Ministry. Rory is placed in a home, but the government retaliates by slapping the Gardiners with a protection order, preventing them from having any contact with their son, and threatening to apprehend their younger child as well. Meanwhile, news of Harry’s suspension rattles clients’ confidence — including the firm's biggest fish, wannabe popstar Sabrina Bass. Feeling the weight of running the firm in Harry’s absence, Daniel goes into damage control mode and struggles to convince Sabrina he is every bit as good as his father. And Abby enlists the help of Cecil and Winston to do some recon on Frank’s new girlfriend Isabelle.
