When Dhanush questions God about why his and Aboli's lives are not going well, he discovers that he has mistreated his wives in his last five lifetimes. As a result, God gives him a chance to correct his mistakes by bringing the wives from those previous lives into his current one and punishes him by tasking him with uncovering and fulfilling each of their deepest desires.
