While taking out the garbage, Mel has an encounter with a little old lady who catches him by surprise when she mugs him. However, when Mel recounts the story, she suddenly becomes four thugs. Mel quickly eats his words when the she is captured.

Alice and Tommy argue over his constant phone usage calling his new girlfriend. When she grounds him, both Tommy and his girlfriend run away from home.

Mel orders the waitresses to smile at all times, which is complicated by Tommy's efforts to push his mother and her new boyfriend Greg into marriage.

Mel fires Alice when she takes a job as a singing messenger to finance Tommy's education.
