Earl is set an assignment after attending a prison class which focuses on creative writing. It doesn't take long before Earl realises that writing is harder than he first thought.

Randy and Earl have to catch Frank, who went on the run after Randy took the prisoners for ice cream, and Joy goes into labour.

Earl has finally got his like on track with a new job, apartment and love interest, but his shocking testimony during Joy's trial may bring it crashing all down.

Upon discovering that he is the holder of a winning ticket, Earl is hit by a car and the ticket blows out of his limp hand as he lies unconscious in the street. While recovering in the hospital and watching television, Earl has a karmic epiphany.

During their high school days, Earl ruined Randy's chance to score a touchdown during a key American football game, so Earl tries to figure out a way to make things right.

Earl's list of misdeeds grows when Joy makes it very clear that he's not welcome at her wedding to Darnell, scheduling it for his birthday so that no one can celebrate with him. This leaves him with just one possible course of action.
