Madame K

Brigitte K withdraws a large sum of money to make a payment on a new large country mansion. She evidently has been helped by Councillor Metsla in this transaction and that they have a relationship. She and her girls settle in to their new premises, which appears to have been hastily left by a German family, the Falkenbergs. In a wardrobe Brigitte finds a uniform with Nazi emblems. The group talk of tjheir histories between the wars and anticipate their first visitors - Councillor Metsla and some Russian officers who are introduced to the girls. One is interested particularly in the Russian girl Anastassia and is perhaps responsible for the death of her father. Metsla tells Brigitte the Russians will be bringing 40,000 troops into the country.

The next day it appears that one of the girls, Linda, has a black eye as a result of her night with one of the Russians. A young woman calling herself Carola arrives on the doorstep asking for work as a maid, telling Brigitte she previously worked at the house for the Falkenbergs and needs a home. Brigitte also invites a new girl, Maria, who has lived in London. Anastassia, the Russian speaker, reveals the Major Tributs had told her his job is to dismantle the Estonian Navy and control the ports. Brigitte overhears Carols on the phone asking someone to 'protect us'. A new group of local officers brings along a young American diplomat, Henry Anthiel, who will soon have to go to Helsinki as the Russians are expelling foreigners. One of the locals thinks he recognizes Carola. During the night, Brigitte seem Carola tearing photos from the Falkenberg family albums and burning them.

Brigitte is curious to learn more about the Falkenbergs and Carola's burning of the photos. She learns that Falkenberg's car went off a cliff and his body burned beyond recognition. His younger wife and daughter rushed back to Germany. Henry Anthiel visits and Metsla is aware he may be a spy. He again stresses to the girls the importance of maintaining good relations with the Russians. One evening Brigitte observes Metsla talking secretly to Carola. She goes to a library to look up old newspaper and school album records and discovers Carola is in fact Elsa Falkenberg. Brigitte confronts Carola about these mysteries. Carola confesses that she is Elsa, and adopted daughter of the Falkenbergs. In a flashback, Elsa tells her parents of her plan to marry the chauffeur Karl. She discusses with Karl whether to turn her father in for being a double agent for both the Germans and Russians and takes her information to Metsla

Still in flashback, Elsa looks for evidence of her fathers spying and is caught by him. In a confrontation she believes she has shot him dead. After washing blood off her hands she returns to the scene to find her mother has moved the body and plans to arrange a fake car accident. Brigitte realizes Metsla has sent Elsa/Carola to work in the house. Elsa is the only one who can identify a Russian spy by his voice. Elsa continues to look for Karl. She joins the other girls on an evening the Russian officers Tsibuts and Siderov. A trap is set and Elsa does pick Siderov as the agent. Siderov attempts to shoot her and Brigitte but is shot from behind by Tsibuts. Metsla reveals that Elsa hadn't killed Falkenberg but that he and his wife murdered Karl and used his body in the accident. Falkenberg has been caught using Karl's passport.

Brigitte and the girls discuss the war situation in Finland being under attack from Russia which they think wants to reclaim it's territory. A woman from another 'house' visits seeking a position but Brigitte dismisses her. As she leaves Brigitte sees a shy young man waiting outside. He is a local chess champion and falls for Maris. An older man calls asking for Linda. It is her father from the country and he believes he is visiting a secretarial school. All the girls hastily arrange an impromptu charade to help Linda hide the truth from him. Metsla arrives and begins to recruit Maria into espionage work on the British. He expects Henry will return to Taillinn. It is New Year's Eve and they all listen to radio speeches from the various world leaders.

The girls have a new occupation knitting sweaters for the Finnish infantry. Metsla reports an increased Russian presence in Estonia and that Finland is close to being taken over. He reconfirms to Brigitte that her house will only have officers as guests. Maria now has meetings with a Brit - McKibben who passes on intelligence. Henry Anthiel meets with Metsla to keep a circle of intelligence happening. The whole house goes off one night for a local premiere of THE WIZARD OF OZ.
